The CDC and the WHO recommend N95 grade disposable masks or better for protection we believe this is deficient in that a N95 mask would allow 5 percent of particles 0.3 microns to enter the mask and H5N1 is approximately 0.1 micron (100 nm) in size and it only take 1 germ to infect a person.

The 3M 8293 is an P100 grade respirator which exceeds the CDC and WHO recommendation in a low cost and disposable configuration and is 99.97% effective. The 3M 8293 is recognized as the most cost effective solution against solid and liquid aerosols including oils available and is only exceeded by non-disposible full and half face respirators.

3M Particulate Respirator 8293 P100 Meets NIOSH 42 CFR 84 N100 requirements. TC-84-2561  Minimum 99.97% filter efficiency when subjected to a 0.3mm MMAD Sodium Chloride particle challenge. Filter performance will be greater against larger or smaller sized oil based particles.

This mask exceeds the NIOSH N95 standard recommended by both the CDC and WHO for health care workers treating SARS or H5N1.

Mask is reusable and is generally good for about 150 hours. The 3M 8293 P100 Particulate Respirator is well suited for those who want NIOSH’s highest rated filtration efficiency in a maintenance free respirator with oil protection. The patented 3M Cool Flow Exhalation Valve offers easy exhalation and cool, dry comfort. Comfortable to wear, the mask contours easily with it's adjustable nose clip to help provide a good, secure face seal. Lightweight construction also increases comfort and contributes to increased wear time. This latex-free mask is considered medium size and will fit most faces.  For Full Face protection we recommend 3M 6000 Series and for Half Face Non-Disposable 3M 7500 Series Respirators.

This respirator is an excellent choice for lead abatement, pharmaceutical manufacturing, welding, metal pouring and work involving substance specific particles. Protects against arsenic and cadmium in concentrations up to 10 times the OSHA PEL.  Intended for heavy-duty use and perfect if you're working in a musty, moldy area, brushing your pet, sanding or cleaning house.

When selecting an P100 respirator, it is important to be aware that a exhalation valve respirator is designed to allow for easy exhalation through a one-way exhalation valve. If a person is wearing a respirator to reduce his or her exposure to FLU/SARS, a respirator with an exhalation valve would be acceptable. It would not be acceptable for someone to wear a valved respirator if they are a suspected or a probable confirmed case of FLU/SARS, as they would be exhaling Viruses and Germs into the Air.  For this purpose we recommend the 3M 8210 N95 Respirator.
